Wells of Hope

A Life-Changing Journey

Over the past four months, Elina, Elin, and Julia have had the incredible opportunity to intern with Wells of Hope in Uganda. Our goal was simple: to immerse ourselves in a different culture and gain new insights into social work. Looking back, we can confidently say that our time here has far exceeded our expectations. Our days have been spent working with some of the most inspiring individuals we’ve met. We’ve led counseling sessions with children in Wells of Hope’s schools, discussing topics like self-esteem, empathy, and conflict resolution. Hearing their stories and guiding them through life’s challenges has been both humbling and rewarding. We’ve also visited prisons, such as Luzira and Kigo, where we provided counseling to incarcerated women. In November, we facilitated a heartwarming event where children visited their parents in prison, strengthening family bonds. In Kigo, we also took part in legal counseling, helping women navigate their cases. One of the most eye-opening parts of our internship has been conducting family visits in and around Kampala and Masaka. We’ve learned how to identify family needs, from school fees to foster care support, and help connect families with the resources they need. Our work at Wells of Hope has given us a deep understanding of social work, particularly in Uganda. We’ve seen firsthand the power of a supportive conversation, the importance of trust, and how small acts of kindness can create meaningful change. We’ve also learned a lot about the need for stronger systems to support children of incarcerated parents—something Wells of Hope is already working hard to address. Overall, our time here has been a life-changing experience, and we are beyond grateful to the team at Wells of Hope for their guidance and generosity. We’ve grown both professionally and personally, and we’ll carry the lessons and memories from this incredible journey with us into our future careers. Wells of Hope has shown us the true power of compassion, and we’re proud to have been a part of it.
