Greetings from Wells of Hope,
I am pleased to invite you to The 6th International Study Week on Children with a parent in prison 2018 which will be held from 14th to 20th June 2020 in Kampala, Uganda.
Over the years, the Study week has developed and captured the interest and attention of many academicians, Social workers, criminologists, Researchers amongst others who are working with Children whose parents in prison and other kinds of people affected by the criminal justice system. The study week is a great avenue for Wells of Hope to consolidate our experience, to share new knowledge and skills, and to discuss and jointly develop an Action Agenda for Children whose Parents are in Prison in Uganda. The study week also aims to promote friendship, solidarity, and one spirit among people working with Children whose parents are in Prison from different parts of the world.
In addition the study week aims at educating participants about the effects of parental imprisonment on children. During the study week the participants understand the plight of children with parents in prison from a global perspective, they learn and contribute towards creative and effective solutions that can be undertaken to protect this vulnerable group of children.
During this one week event, the Wells of Hope team takes participants to visit remote villages and isolated people especially grandmothers who care for their grandchildren when the parents are imprisoned. When you meet the families in the rural communities helped by Wells of Hope, you will be overwhelmed by their life stories, motivated by their achievements and inspired to overcome the challenges in your own life and community at large.
In the afternoons and on the second last day, we conduct seminars and meetings to exchange ideas; share lessons learned and collectively arrive at an Action Agenda for Children whose Parents are in Prison.
In this eventful week, the participants get an opportunity to visit the Children with parents in prison, at their residential schools-Wells of Hope Junior School and Wells of Hope High School, schools established to cater for the general welfare for these children, the first ones of a kind; you will sympathize for them from their stories and be entertained by their skills and talents through Music, Dance and Drama which show the different traditions of Uganda while communicating the plight of a child with a parent in prison.
Participants will visit the parents of these children in Prison, share with them and get to learn what they think about their children and families back home while in prison..
Throughout the Study Week, you will get an opportunity to talk about your organization/agency or your work so that we can learn more about what you do as best practice to protect children with parents in prison in your home country. Participants get an opportunity to tour Uganda’s famous tourist sites to experience the fauna and flora that spells the beauty of our country.
