Open Gates For Children With Incarcerated Parents

Francis Ssuubi conducted a round table discussion on 4th June 2019 at the Tanzania Commission for Human Rights and Good Governance (CHRGG) in Dar Es Salaam. The discussion was about open gates for children in Tanzania so that they can visit their parents in prison, a right they have never had.

The meeting was attended by 18 participants from Prison Officials, Dar Es Salaam Region Prisons Officer (RPO), The Prisons department in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Municipal Councils’ Social well officers, Reverends from the Tanzania Assemblies of God (TAG)-Kichemchem Street Church, Civil society and the media. The participants cordially welcomed the Children Education Society (CHESO) and its partners strides for immediate needs response and prevention of mental disorders for these children of a parent in prison. They called upon the stakeholders to advocate for removal of the Policy barrier preventing children to visit their parents in Tanzania Prisons. This advocacy proposal was also initially supported by high level officials in the Prisons Department in the Ministry of home affairs.
