“Whenever my children visit me, I gain a lot of hope and courage”; Children’s Prison Visit

It is a great opportunity for Wells of Hope to facilitate children to visit their imprisoned parents. It’s because of your support we are able to help these children maintain contacts with their parents in prison. It’s only when children in Uganda go with Wells of Hope that they are able to have direct contact visits, where they are able to hug, eat and talk directly with their parents. On 25th October, 2018, 81 children visited their parents in six different prisons, the children were accompanied by 12 volunteers. Prior to the day the children wrote letters to their parents and also asked their friends to write letters to their parents. The children were so excited about visiting their parents; they almost didn’t sleep that night because they were anxious to wake early to go and visit their parents. They left school at 07:00 a.m in the morning after having breakfast. While on the bus the children sang songs of praise and victory.

By 10:00a.m, the children and the volunteers had reached the prisons; both the children and the parents had an incredible time together. This time round they had over three hours together .The parents went through the children’s midterm term exams and with the help of the teachers they got to know the children’s progress in class. They also counseled their children and encouraged them to be good children, to be very careful as they go for the long holiday; they cautioned them to avoid peer groups and moving at night, that any mistake they make now may cost them forever. At the end of the visit all the parents prayed with the children.

The parents also used this time send letters to their guardians at home.

Below were some of the highlights:

  • Barbara, mother to Sarah, Rose and Rebecca was so excited to have her children visit. “Whenever my children visit me, I gain a lot of hope and courage.” While in prison, Barbra washes clothes and knits mats for other inmates who pay in return and the money earned is kept and buys a few items for her children to use while at school.
  • Gaddafi, father to Hidadi and Sharifa was so happy to see his daughter; he encouraged her to be disciplined, to keep away from bad groups. He further prayed for her to excel in her Primary Leaving Examinations
  • Rosemary 5 years old brought a smile to all the people; she smiled and greeted everyone. Her father  was thrilled with joy at the glimpse of his daughter. When he saw her, he hugged her and carried her on his laps. He interacted with her and served her a special meal.
  • Sam, father to Daniel and Jennifer too was filled with joy to meet his children again. All throughout the visit, he carried Jennifer. In his words, he said,”I am so glad that my children are in school, because if I had gotten this opportunity probably I wouldn’t be in prison.”
  •  “Seeing how healthy Edith and Patrick look gives me great joy and peace of mind that they are now in safe hands,” said Najua, Patrick and Edith’s mother.

We thank Partners In Hope USA, Maureen Michael, Antonette Sotelo and Jenna Rwagisha who donated towards this visit.
