There is an upsurge of offenders who commit serious crimes. Offenders in this category now constitute 71%of the prisoners in the Prisons’ custody. Petty offenders account for the remaining 29%. Something seems to be going wrong in the society. The situation is gloomy and needs to be arrested before it gets out of hand”.

Further statistics reveal that 47.3% of the inmates on remand for defilement, 30.9% for murder, robbery has 15.6% and 5% for rape. Petty offenders constitute less than 2%.

All together there are 26,126 in mates in Uganda’s prisons and only 3.4% were women.

The numbers of prisoners continue to swell everyday, overstretching the prisons capacity to accommodate and feed them. The institute was meant to accommodate only 9,048 (30.6.2006 - central government prisons) in mates.

On average there are 10-15 prisoners being released everyday, and this is so small compared to the ones that are being admitted into the institution.
